Kung Pao Chicken Pizza at Fongs Pizza Reviews
I kept trying to explain Chinese pizza to the OSU press corps that never has been to Fong's in Des Moines, Iowa, and I resorted to literalness.
What does egg curlicue pizza taste similar? It tastes just like an egg whorl.
Fong's has go a must-go place in my Big 12 travels. We went last twelvemonth the nighttime before the OU-Iowa State game, and information technology was astounding. So dorsum we went Friday nighttime, before the OSU-Iowa State game.
Scotty Wright and Jacob (Virgil) Unruh from our staff, joined past Frank Bonner from the Tulsa Globe. All had expressed skepticism almost Chinese pizza, despite my difficult sell.
Fong'due south is a hole-in-the-wall joint in downtown Des Moines, which is a bustling district and always impresses newcomers. Fong's will make you a traditional pizza. Simply it has a Chinese motif, and the top items on the menu are Chinese pizza.
Egg coil pizza. Crab Rangoon pizza. General Tso pizza. Kung Pao pizza. Orange craven pizza. Thai chicken pizza. Several others.
I was a little leery last year. But I tried it, and information technology was fabulous. And so I congenital information technology up to the guys, and they agreed to give it a try.
We arrived a lilliputian before Frank and parked about three blocks away at the ornate Polk County Courthouse. Nosotros walked to Fong'due south, amidst both millennials and panhandlers, and put in our name. The hostess told united states the expect would be maybe an hr. Uh-oh. I didn't know if I could go the guys to wait an hour for nutrient they weren't sold on.
But Frank wasn't there yet, then we had to look anyway. Fong's had taken my phone number and sent me a text; through yelp, I could follow our society in line. When Frank arrived after about x minutes, we had moved up from 8th to third in line. That was progress. And after a wait of 17 minutes, nosotros had a tabular array.
So explain that to me. Why would you say an hour, when the wait might be only a fraction of that? If Frank had been with us from the showtime, nosotros might have walked away.
And that would have been a disaster. Because the pizza was magnificent. Nosotros decided on two larges (16-inch) and i small (ten-inch). General Tso was the small; crab Rangoon and egg roll were the larges.
To say they were a hit would be understating the case. I liked the egg roll the best; anybody else voted Crab Rangoon the all-time. We devoured it all – 42 inches is a lot of pizza for four guys – and everyone was won over. The General Tso pizza tasted just like a Full general Tso dish, complete with the miniature corn on the cobs. The crab Rangoon tasted just like crab Rangoon. Information technology's a stunning concept.
Much similar the taco pizza you can become at some places; my favorite was Rodney's Pizza in Purcell, which sadly is gone since Rodney retired. Simply the taco pizza tasted just like a taco. And the same at Fong's.
Our morning had begun in the rain, in a rented Jeep Cherokee. Scotty drove the whole fashion, but the rain stopped somewhere around the Kansas line. Scotty had valiantly finished near all his work before the trip; that was my aim, as well, before the engine blew on my Nissan Frontier on Tuesday night, and the rest of my calendar week was occasionally derailed by car issues.
So I sabbatum in the dorsum seat and worked. Somewhere on the Kansas Turnpike, we stopped for gas at an EZ Go, and I grabbed a hot dog. I am very large on convenience store hot dogs. The bun warmer is one of the world's 10 greatest technological achievements, and the hot dog selections are vast. I got a smoked-sausage with cheddar, put some nacho cheese and mustard on it, and I was set.
We made the familiar trek – Topeka, Kansas City, and then north to Iowa. It'south e'er fun to bulldoze in Iowa. Information technology just feels unlike. And the landscapes are great Americana. Just what you lot recall Iowa ought to look like, that's what Iowa looks like on I-35.
I don't mind driving (or, better yet, riding). Even eight hours. Across that, probably not. But driving is easier than flight. Our man Nate Feken of KFOR-Television was going to join the states for dinner, just he texted me during the day. Nate flew to Des Moines; he was scheduled to state at 12:30 p.thousand. Due to delays and flying changes, he was due to land at nine:xxx.
No cheers.
We checked into our Springhill Suites effectually v:30 p.chiliad., went to dinner and I got dwelling in plenty of fourth dimension to watch the Thunder-Wizards game on my iPad, along with Southern Cal-Colorado on ESPN. The USC-CU game was excellent. The Thunder stunk.
And then I savage asleep, which is normal for anyone after a visit to Fong'south.
