~ Ego revealing his true plans.
" My river lily who knew all the words to every song that came over the radio. I returned to Earth to run into her three times, just I knew if I returned a fourth… I'd never leave... The Expansion… The reason for my very beingness would be over, so, I did what I had to do... but... information technology broke my center to put that tumor in her head.
~ Ego expressing his love for Meredith and revealing the reason for her death - his infamous qoute
" I told you…I don't desire to do this alone. You cannot deny the purpose the universe has bestowed upon Yous. It doesn't demand to be like this, Peter. WHY are y'all destroying OUR Risk?! Terminate pretending yous aren't what y'all are! One in billions, trillions, even more! WHAT GREATER Meaning Tin LIFE Mayhap HAVE TO OFFER?!
~ Ego to Peter.

Ego the Living Planet is a major antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically equally the primary adversary of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. ii and a posthumous antagonist in Avengers: Infinity State of war. Variants of him also serves equally a cameo adversary in "What If... T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?", and a pocket-size antagonist in both What If.. Ultron Won, and What If.. The Watcher Broke His Oath?, three episodes of the Marvel animated anthology series What If...?.

He is an egotistical and omnicidal Celestial who desires to aggrandize himself over the entire universe, which would hateful the destruction of all life in information technology. Like Ronan from the first film, this version of Ego is far crueler, malevolent and an infinitely bigger threat than his mainstream comic counterpart ever was. Non only is he is the second curvation-nemesis of the Guardians of the Galaxy, only he is too the biological begetter and nearly hated foe of Peter Quill outside of Thanos.

He was portrayed by Kurt Russell, who also played Stuntman Mike in Expiry Proof and John Ruth in The Mean Eight. Aaron Schwartz was his torso double as his younger self. His alternative form was briefly portrayed by David Hasselhoff, who as well played Garthe Knight in Knight Rider.

Biography

Beginnings

" Ego: I was afraid it wouldn't take to the soil, but it grew quickly, and soon it'll be everywhere. All across the universe.
Meredith: I don't know what y'all're talking about, merely I like the way you say it.
Ego: My heart is yours, Meredith Quill.
Meredith: I can't believe I cruel in dear with a spaceman.
~ Ego and Meredith expressing their dear for one another.

Millions of years ago, Ego was built-in equally a fellow member of a primordial, god-like race known as the Celestials. He dwelled in loneliness for years, until he discovered his ability to manipulate affair and constructed a protective shell around himself. Over the class of many years, he kept building layers over the shell which evolved into a planet itself. The interstellar coordinates of this planet were G52 22C848T12F+E16UC22.

Afterwards this, he began to wonder about the purpose of his being. To detect purpose and meaning, Ego decided to create a humanoid avatar, which was an extension of his consciousness, to explore the galaxy and dwell among other galactic civilizations besides every bit learn about these civilizations.

During the 1980s, Ego met Meredith Quill on Globe and vicious in love with her. He takes Meredith behind a Dairy Queen and shows her a cute small blue flower, and pridefully claims that soon information technology will be grown all across the universe. Meredith states that she doesn't sympathise what he is saying, merely loves the manner he is proverb information technology before standing to make out with him. Unknown to her, her lover wasn't even shut to being the gentleman she thought he was.

Guardians of the Galaxy

" Kraglin: Yeah, Quill turned out okay. It's probably adept we didn't deliver him to his dad similar we was hired to practice.
Yondu: Aye, that guy was a jackass.
~ Yondu and Kraglin, foreshadowing Ego's true colors.

Ego did not announced in the film, but was mentioned past Irani Rael when she tells Star-Lord that he was able to survive the Power Stone, which he used forth with the Guardians of the Galaxy to destroy Ronan the Accuser from destroying Xandar, thanks to the species of his mysterious father, allowing Peter to go aware that his father was all the same live. He was also mentioned by Yondu and Kraglin when they brought up the Celestial'south request to option upwardly his son for him. The duo stated that not giving him to his male parent was a noble selection, with Yondu referring to Ego as a "jackass", foreshadowing Ego's truthful colors in the sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Coming together With the Guardians

In the present, Ego rescues the Guardians from Ayesha past obliterating all the drone ships chasing them, although only Rocket notices him. After the Guardians bump on a nearby planet, Ego and his retainer Mantis descend onto the planet and Ego introduces himself as Star-Lord'southward father.

Star-Lord and his father then get to know each other and Ego offers to let his son and his friends come to his planet, and, while Star-Lord has doubt virtually his truthful intentions and that he may not exist his true father, Gamora assures him that at that place is a skillful adventure that Ego is his true father and that he shouldn't let this opportunity slide.

With that, Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax depart with Ego and Mantis, while Rocket and Groot stay backside with the captured Nebula. On the ship, Mantis uses her powers to help Ego sleep.

Taking the Guardians on his World

On his world, Ego shows his son, Star-Lord and Gamora the beauty of his planet. Ego then explains his origin; Millions of years ago, he was a small, speck like being that adult thought and learned to control matter, eventually building himself the planet. Ego and so searched the creation for other forms of life, somewhen finding life and falling in love with and impregnating Meredith Quill on Earth. After he heard nigh how Meredith had contracted brain cancer and was dying, he hired Yondu Udonta to retrieve his son from Earth and deliver him, although Yondu didn't follow his orders and instead kept Quill around because he could fit inside small-scale spaces and Ego has been searching for him ever since.

Peter Quill then angrily asks to know why Ego abandoned his mother during her fourth dimension of need, and he states that, if his planet isn't under his constant attention, it will dissipate. Ego then tells his son that he does truly intendance for him and wants to be the father that he never got to be. Ego then shows Peter how to admission his Celestial powers, didactics him how to create and playing catch with him, something that Peter was upset over never having done. Meanwhile, Mantis, while bonding with Drax, attempts to tell him something near Ego'south planet, just decides not to when Gamora unintentionally interrupts them. While exploring the planet, Mantis states that there are no other people on the planet because "a domestic dog doesn't allow fleas onto its back".

When questioned by Gamora over what she was about to say, Mantis hesitates and claims she wasn't going to say anything. Because of this, Gamora becomes concerned over what Ego's intentions are and ends up at an impasse with Star-Lord, who completely trusts his father and wants to bond with him while as well being annoyed with her for trying to plow him against him.

Truthful Intentions Revealed

" I phone call it "The Expansion". It is my purpose, and at present it is yours as well. Over thousands of years, I implanted thousands of extensions of myself on thousands of worlds. I demand to fulfill life's one true purpose: to abound and spread, covering all that exists until everything is... me!
~ Ego reveals his intentions to Peter.

After Gamora leaves and tries to contact Rocket (catastrophe upward in a fight with Nebula), Ego continues to teach Peter most his abilities, stating that, every bit long as the Planet's core is intact, the both of them are immortal. Ego and then prepares to show Star-Lord the purpose of their existence and expands on his origin, giving his son the ability to see the entire universe at one time, all of which is witnessed by Mantis, who heads off to warn Drax of what Ego has planned.

Ego explains that, when he found other life in the universe, he was disappointed at what he found and decided that the purpose of all life in the universe was to become him, and that the "flowers" he had planted were actually all extensions of himself that he planted in thousands of dissimilar worlds. Ego soon realized that even a single Celestial wouldn't take the power to activate all the extensions at once, however, two would, and then began breeding with thousands of unlike alien species in gild to find the one whose genetics would line up with his own and create a new Celestial, and would then decadent Yondu to take him retrieve the child he created for him, nevertheless, every single child conceived was a failure that Ego soon killed (the skeletal remains of which were all discovered past Gamora and Nebula). Ego and so stated that the ane matter he did non expect was actually falling in love with Meredith Quill, and knowing that his dear would get in the fashion of his goals, he decided to get rid of her once Peter was born, stating that "Information technology broke my centre when I had to put that tumor in her caput." Discovering that his father was responsible for his mother's death, Star-Lord snapped out of his trance and angrily began shooting him and blowing his form to pieces. Ego then reforms himself, briefly taking the form of Quill's role model David Hasselhoff just to mock him. Realizing that his son would never proceed with his plans and existence angry over being shot, Ego uses his powers to possess his son to absorb his power and starts activating the extensions. Ego and then cruelly crushes Peter's Walkman, the last sentiment to his belatedly mother. Earlier his plans could go any further, Yondu and Rocket crash their ship directly on top of Ego, temporarily stunning him while the team freed Star-Lord and got away. Later escaping, Yondu wished to exit the planet equally soon as possible, however, Star-Lord stated that his male parent was too unsafe to be left alive and has Yondu fly downwardly to the planet's core, as it is the source of all Ego's power and life.

The squad tries to fire a hole in the cadre's protective layer, however, Ayesha and her Sovereign drones get in and effort to impale the Guardians again, at the same time, Ego manages to find them and uses his energy tentacles to try and kill them. Drax then manages to convince Mantis to use her powers to brand Ego fall asleep, temporarily putting him out of the fight, although Mantis eventually ends upward beingness knocked out during the chaos, allowing Ego to go along trying to destroy the Guardians. Ego's physical form then surfaces hush-hush and berates Star-Lord for trying to stop him, eventually managing to have all the Guardians at his mercy, starting to crush Rocket, Gamora, Groot, Nebula, and Yondu to expiry, drowning Drax in the sand and possessing Star-Lord yet again and beginning to re-spread his extensions, telling his son that in that location is nil worth fighting for except power.

Battle on Ego's Planet and Death

" Terminate. Listen to me! You are a God. If you kill me, you'll be just similar everybody else! (Peter: What'southward and then wrong with that?) No!
~ Ego's last words before he dies.

Subsequently getting some inspirational words from Yondu and reminiscing of the happy moments with his friends and family unit, Star-Lord furiously tells his father that he shouldn't have killed his female parent and destroyed his Walkman, before harnessing his own Celestial powers, breaking gratis from his father'south control, much to the latter's complete surprise. Star-Lord then begins to mercilessly pummel his father into submission whilst simultaneously saving his friends and stopping the spread of the extensions. Ego withal manages to free himself from his son'southward grip and throw him on a stone. Enraged at Quill's defiance and determined to take him downward, he transforms himself into a behemothic of stone facing Quill transformed into Pacman. As Star-Lord and his father fight, Groot delivers Rocket's bomb to the center of the planet and artillery it, allowing the team five minutes to escape, with Rocket regretfully having to leave Star-Lord backside in guild to not risk the lives of his other friends. Wearied due to having fought each other at their full power, Star-Lord, too tired to utilize his powers, and nevertheless outraged over his mother'south death, continues beating and property down Ego in order to prevent him from ever getting to the core. Ego then shouts at Peter, telling him that if he allows the core to exist destroyed, he'll be normal and lose his powers. However, Peter nonchalantly asks him what's the problem with that, implying that he's willing to give up his powers for the sake of his own friends. This causes Ego to scream in fear every bit the bomb goes off and destroys the core, turning him into grit and ending his threat one time and for all, also avenging Meredith Quill's death.

Avengers: Infinity War

In the film, the Guardians rescued Thor post-obit the deaths of Loki Laufeyson, Heimdall, and half of the Asgardian refugees at the hands of Thanos and the Black Order. Ego was mentioned by Star-Lord when Thor explained his recent battle against his evil half-sis Hela, relating his boxing against Ego implying that he went through worse since he had to go through with killing his begetter.

What If...?

In the second episode What If... T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?, a variant of Ego plays a similar role to the one his original counterpart had in an alternating universe where Prince T'Challa from Wakanda became Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill, as Yondu Udonta asked his fellow Ravagers to call up Peter instead of doing it himself. However, as Yondu decides to accept T'Challa every bit his surrogate son, he decides to not inform Ego about his failure to retrieve Peter, likely for the same reasons he didn't deliver Peter in the original universe.

Years after, in 2008, subsequently defeating The Collector and freeing his slaves, T'Challa returns alongside Yondu and all his friends to Wakanda, and during a party, Yondu decides to tell T'Chaka, Ramonda and Shuri how did he end up taking T'Challa. At the end of the episode, Ego makes an appearance by visiting Peter, now working equally a janitor at a Dairy Queen, on World, saying that he wants to meet him, leading the Watcher, who has seen the episode's events, to speculate if Ego's relationship with Peter will cause the end of the earth, but says that such story volition have to await.

In the viii episode What If... Ultron Won?, a variant of Ego's planet is seen in an alternate universe where Ultron defeated the Avengers and brought nigh humanity'south extinction before killing Thanos and destroying all life in his universe, becoming Infinity Ultron. During his intergalactic genocidal quest, after killing the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Sovereign, before attacking Xandar, Infinity Ultron's sentries attack by Ego's planet, swarming a surpised Ego until his planet was blown upwardly, killing him.

In the ninth episode What If... The Watcher Broke His Oath?, the Ego variant of the universe where T'Challa became Star-Lord appears again. After coming together up with Peter, Ego starts the Expansion past incapacitating his son and using him as a living bombardment, promising that his suffering would approximately stop a millenium later. However, the Ravager fleet attacks the expanding mass from the Dairy Queen earlier T'Challa arrives to rescue Peter and straps an explosive to Ego, incapacitating him for a while. At the terminate of the episode, T'Challa is shown to have apparently recruited Peter Quill to go 1 of the Ravagers, which likely ways that just like his original analogue, Ego will non be able to perform the Expansion and will fight the Ravagers from now on.

Personality

" I tried so difficult to find the form that best suited you, and this is the thanks I get? You really need to GROW Up! I wanted to do this together, simply I suppose you'll have to learn by spending the side by side thou years as a BATTERY!"
~ Ego to his son Peter Quill later on telling Peter how he killed the latter's mother and revealing his true nature.

Ego initially appears to exist very sympathetic and kind, a loving father and lover likewise as affable towards those who know him, but as his truthful intentions are revealed, the monster within him comes to the low-cal. He is a very violent, young, selfish, cold, dangerous, and horrifyingly ruthless monster, being one of the near vicious and dangerous villains in the Curiosity Cinematic Universe thus far, and also the ane with the nigh victims in 1 flick, surpassing the atrocities caused by Ronan (who was the most fierce enemy the Guardians faced before the second picture) until Thanos wiped out half the universe. Unlike Ronan, he is very good at hiding his true goal; the latter never bothered to even act politely, and while the Accuser was driven by pure hatred, Ego is rather driven past a life's purpose.

He has no qualms about killing his own children; he also believes his form and intelligence is the only ane that should rule the galaxy. This stemmed from his disillusionment over life he encountered, which he considered inferior and not up to his standard of species perfection, which fabricated him consider expanding his ain power by transforming the milky way into extensions of himself and his progeny equally the only meaning of his eternal life. Too, the endless years of loneliness he has endured did non help. Ego also strongly believes that friends, family unit or emotional connections are worth little compared to his cease goal of The Expansion too as the fact that unlike the Celestials, they will die out eventually. His God circuitous prevents him from seeing the entire extent of the evil he has done throughout millenia, and he sees his deportment equally necessary for his plan rather than evil despite being well enlightened of how said actions injure others.

Also, although non really obvious, he is big-headed, being then convinced that mortals are useless to the Universe that he is absolutely sure that his son volition hold with his plan. This airs also makes him think he is the virtually powerful existence in the Universe and that nobody tin can attain his ability, fifty-fifty believing it volition take to Peter several millions of years of learning to master it. Ironically, despite completely disregarding mortal life, when information technology becomes clear to him his death is imminent, Ego is admittedly frightened.

As a manipulator, he normally presented himself as a mannerly and respectable person, and hides his true nature past acting welcoming, friendly, and fifty-fifty humble, such as calling his planet no smaller than Earth's moon and stating himself as a god "with a modest g" and other friendly facades. When Ego met with the women he impregnated from different planets, such every bit Meredith Quill, he came off equally an otherworldly traveler who only wishes to acquire more almost other species. Nevertheless, he later describes himself as alternately "the sailor" and "the ocean" from a vocal Peter'south mother loved, demonstrating Ego'southward belief that he is the merely thing that matters in the universe, at least from his perspective (As well every bit farther setting himself up equally a kind of evil, psychopathic and indifferent counterpart to his son, taking Peter's beloved of oldies music and turning it into a justification for his evil). Upon coming together with the Guardians of the Galaxy and his son, Peter Quill, he posed as a cocky admitting wise father, sharing Quill's humour and love of pop culture references to lull him into a false sense of security and eventually unlock his Celestial abilities. Even with his manipulative and charismatic attitude, Yondu Udonta ruthlessly remembers Ego as a "jackass" when he was hired by him, in one case he realized Ego killed the previous children. Though not fully enlightened with how dangerous Ego tin can be, Yondu knows that bad things volition happen to Quill had he reunited with his begetter, prompting him to prefer him equally his son instead of giving him to Ego.

Despite all of that, Ego seemingly barbarous in love with Earthling Meredith Quill. He went to visit her three times until it got in the way of his plans to transform the universe, so he "reluctantly" put a tumor within her brain to kill her. However, he soon forgot about the supposed love he had for Meredith, with Ego trying to explain to Star-Lord that killing Meredith sounds bad only it wasn't really a bad action. In improver, his way of killing her in a very painful death makes his supposed love for her very questionable. On the other hand, the fact that he needs Mantis' help to sleep implies that, for all his horrific actions and callousness towards mortal life, deep down he still felt guilt for his actions over the millennia or at least, indicating that he's e'er stressed about his plan possibly failing. All the same, 1 could also say that he only did it because he wanted to command her every bit she mentions that he treated her like a pet. Ego also had a degree of fondness for Quill because he was a Celestial like him thus could help with his plan. He never outright lies to Peter about anything (at to the lowest degree, nothing that he really had any reason to lie about). However, he does choice out specific things to tell him and when to tell him. Ego also still cared for his son earlier his betrayal, and instead of immediately taking his son'southward energy the start chance he had, preferred to become to know his son and openly told him that he wanted to dominion the universe together and didn't want to alive lone, until Quill turned against him and forced his mitt. This led Ego to lose all care for Star-Lord because he had no trouble turning Star-Lord into a battery for a thousand years then he can start his cataclysmic plan, and on the style, losing all guilt that he could have.

Ego's relationship with Mantis (his adopted daughter) was heavily tainted by his narcissistic and calumniating personality. Ignoring the importance for raising her to survive in the universe, Ego treated her more similar a "flea with a purpose" (i.e. a pet) by not letting anyone else reside on his surface prior to coming together the Guardians. Furthermore, given her lack of social skills, it is probable that Ego didn't even care about her enough to teach her the basics of mortal life.

All this makes Ego a childish, selfish monster who will disregard his few redeeming traits to get his way.

Trivia

  • Ego is perhaps one of the most dangerous villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fifty-fifty surpassing Thanos, existence the only villain to surpass him on being more than dangerous. Thanos but wanted to impale half of the universe so the other half would thrive, while Ego wanted to digest the entire universe into himself. However, while Thanos did succeed in his plans in Avengers: Infinity State of war, Ego did not.
  • In the comics, Ego is non a Angelic, only rather an Elder of the Universe, similar the Collector and Grandmaster. He has been an enemy of Thor and the Nova Corps for a long time.
  • In the comics as well as the 2015 blithe show based on Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill's male parent is a completely different grapheme named J'son of Spartax. James Gunn considered this character'due south royal status to be a repeat of Star Wars and otherwise did not similar him in general, hence the decision to alter the identity of Star-Lord's male parent. Concept fine art for the movie refers to Ego as J'son to hide the reveal.
  • Ego'south human advent is based on Ord Zyonz, the Gardener, 1 of the Elders of the Universe and the keeper of the Fourth dimension Stone before Thanos.
  • Ego was the second Angelic to appear in the MCU (the starting time ane was Eson the Searcher, following Arishem the Judge).
  • Kurt Russell, who portrayed Ego, besides portrays Mr. Nobody in the The Fast and The Furious franchise. Coincidentally, both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. ii and The Fate of the Furious came out in 2017.
  • Ego'southward death is an ironic echo of how he chose to impale Meredith Quill. While Meredith gradually died from a brain tumor that was deliberately put into her skull, Ego had his brain destroyed by a bomb powered with the Sovereign's batteries.
  • Ego's dearest for the song Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) stems from the Celestial viewing himself as the crewman who is supposedly singing the closing refrain. Ego feels that he doesn't accept time for weaker beings like Star-Lord and Meredith, just as the crewman feels that he doesn't have any time for the woman with whom he begins a love thing.
  • Although Ego's comic book counterpart was never particularly dainty or heroic, he was a relatively harmless joke character when anyone except Jack Kirby wrote stories featuring him. Prior to his appearance in Ultimates 2 fighting alongside Galactus, most stories had ridiculous plots such as the Hulk fighting monstrous acne on his surface or Rocket Raccoon de-lousing his hair. Hither, he is a spiteful, selfish, sociopathic, egotistical, omnicidal maniac who is willing to murder anyone who interferes in his goal, whether it is Peter's half-siblings for not inheriting Angelic powers, or Meredith Quill for triggering the romantic feelings that he considered a hindrance. Ego's "Expansion", which involves consuming every habitable place in the universe, is presented as a completely serious threat for killing all other life forms in the procedure. Much like Ronan, Ego is hence markedly more malicious in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than in the original comics.
  • Gary Oldman, Viggo Mortensen, Christoph Waltz, the late Christopher Plummer, the late Max von Sydow, Alec Baldwin, Ron Perlman, Stephen Lang, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Robert De Niro, Michael Biehn, Mel Gibson and Liam Neeson were all considered for the role of Ego earlier Kurt Russell was cast.
  • Ego'southward plan to terraform a planet to wipe out life is similar to Ultron'south, except Ultron simply tried to wipe out an entire planet while Ego tried to wipe out the entire universe. Also unlike Ultron who started out with adept intentions, Ego lacked any good volition from the moment he started his plan.
  • Although he claims to be a Celestial, another one is seen in the previous motion-picture show and he looks like a giant humanoid while Ego's true class is a white encephalon, which is completely unlike. There can be three explanations for this:
    • Each Celestial looks unique and different from one some other.
    • It'southward possible that Ego's truthful form being a white brain is the same for all Celestials. Since Celestials like Arishem used Cosmic Energy to create Galaxies, Ego may have used Catholic Free energy to form his own planet and avatar. Information technology'due south possible that Celestials similar Arishem too used the same power to create their physical bodies.
    • Since the Celestials were born during an Emergence as showcased in Eternals, it is possible that Ego may take had a Celestial body, but by the fourth dimension of his Emergence, his body didn't grade but his brain did.
  • Ego, from a behavioral point of view, is a malignant tumor. He infects planet with seeds and when these seeds are activated, they abound and impale everything on their fashion.
  • Ego's personality is strongly influenced by his millions of years of unwilling isolation without any interactions. When he became to able to move himself into the Universe and seek others lifeforms, he ended disappointed because at that place were mortals unlike him and so they were gonna die somewhen, hence why he decided to assimilate the Universe into himself. All the same, despite his claims, he was never alone because there are others immortals beings in the MCU. This is evident equally information technology was revealed in Eternals, there are many Celestials living in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This makes his excuse of his horrible acts nullified.
  • His proper name "Ego" says a lot virtually him. He is a perfect example of Narcissistic personality disorder. He has a loftier sentiment of superiority and profoundly lacks of empathy.
  • Ego'south brain originally beats similar a normal heart but after Groot activates the bomb on him, he begins beating much faster, clearly showing his fear of his imminent decease.
  • Ego has some Satanic elements. Meredith described him as an "angel, equanimous of pure calorie-free" and the name Lucifer means "light bringer". Like many representations of Satan, Ego is charismatic and egotistical, corrupts both Yondu Udonta and Peter and is willing to destroy many lives if that benefits him.
  • Kurt Russell, who played Ego, is the father of Wyatt Russell, who also played another character in the MCU, U.S. Agent.
